Galena Celebrates Ulysses S. Grant’s Birthday

File:Ulysses Grant 1870-1880.jpgShort Bio of Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant served as the 18th President of the United States.  He served in office from 1869 to 1877.  Ulysses served as general-in-chief of the Union Army during the Civil War, and led the North to a victory against the Confederates.

After graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1843, Grant was a lieutenant in the Mexican-American War from 1846-1848.  When he left the army in 1854 he struggled, and found it very hard to make a decent living.  Grant worked as a real estate agent, a general laborer and a county engineer.  Then in 1861 he joined with the North in the Civil War.  Grant quickly earned a reputation of being extremely aggressive and quickly rose through the rankings.  Abraham Lincoln made him lieutenant general in 1864.
